Editor's review of Corel Painter Essentials
Essentials is a must-have
Corel Painter Essentials 4 is a slimmed-down version of Painter for home use, but don't let that fool you into thinking that the average home user will be disappointed. For those who like to play around with their photos, tweaking them artistically, Essentials provides a deep toolbox under its intuitive layout.

All the tool icons in the palette are large and easy to understand, there's nothing obscure or hard to remember here. Brush sizes and opacity can be adjusted at the top of the editing window using sliders, and while a few main brushes live on the main left-side toolbar, you can change those by accessing the Brush Drawer. The program features two workspaces, Drawing & Painting and Photo Painting. The first is a standard image creation template, while the second lets you upload a photo and "paint" over it.

The Photo Painting was quite impressive. When you upload an image, you select which parts of it you want shown by using the same variety of paint tools available in the Drawing & Painting workspace. The choices are quite deep, too: you can choose to change the texture of the images by changing the paper, you can change the brush type and width, and even use different kinds of paints to change your staid photo into an Impressionist work of art.

The art of customizing your icons has come a long way, thanks to CandyBar, a utility designed to customize everything from the look of the Finder toolbar, folders, the Trash, and everything in between. With CandyBar, nothing is sacred. The thoughtful interface makes swapping icons easy by simply dragging and dropping. We really like iContainers, which pack a set of icons into a single file. You even can save your current icon scheme to an iContainer to quickly switch among custom-created sets. Overall, CandyBar is a wonderfully simple application that makes dressing up your icons a joy.

Editor's review of Blender (PowerPC)
Blend your rendering programs into one all-powerful app
If you've ever thought about making professional-quality animations but decided not to because of the cost of the software, your excuse just got up and walked out the door. Blender is a free, open-source 3D rendering program that puts the power of the medium back into the hands of the artist.

Blender features a laundry list of animation essentials that can be broken down into categories: Interface, Modeling, Rigging, Rendering, Animation, UV Unwrapping, Shading, Physics and Particles, Imaging and Compositing, and Real Time 3D/Game Creation. The interface, though loaded with complicated tools, is remarkable for neither obscuring nor interfering with the image being worked on. A brief sampling of tools and functions includes 3D paint for vertex weighing, polygon meshes, 2D and 3D procedural brushes, edge rendering, textures, collision simulation, and support for around two dozen 2D and 3D file formats. Extras can be added with Python scripting, and since it's open source, many scripts can be easily found for download in the user forums.

Blender is not for the faint of heart. Learning to use it is time-consuming and best done by following the detailed tutorials available on the Blender Web site. There is also an extensive online Blender community, making familiarization with the app less painful--if not pain-free. However, none of these detracts from the overall experience or usefulness of the program, and we strongly recommend it for advanced users.

Editor's review of Battery
Combining the ease of use of a traditional drum machine with the sound- sculpting prowess of a sampler, Native Instruments Battery 2.0 is one of the best software-percussion tools available. Built around a clean interface that has become the de facto standard for all products in Native Instruments' pro-audio line, Battery is approachable and simple to learn. Once you load sound into the matrix-style interface, the fun begins. Each sample cell has an enormous amount of sound-tweaking flexibility, boasting tools such as compressors, multimode filters, LFO, customizable envelopes, and resampling effects. Also included is a mapping editor for layering up to 128 sounds together. Other controls include tune, saturation, bit control, and hertz. We liked the free-form envelope controls, which make it a snap to custom-tailor sounds to your specs. Our only complaint with Battery is that it really can't do much without a sequencer or some other MIDI device to drive it. Thankfully, Battery interfaces with RTAS, VST, Audio Units, Core Audio, Core MIDI, Dxi, ASIO, and Direct Sound, giving you plenty of options for hooking up to other programs. With its multitude of features, we can easily recommend Battery to both newbie beatheads and old-school pros alike.

Adobe's latest version of Shockwave Player browser plug-in works like a charm, running with ease any and all of the Web games we played during testing. Our tests turned up nothing to make us worry. We experienced no glitches or problems. For gamers, Shockwave Player is a must-have. Users at any level of expertise should have no qualms about installing or upgrading Shockwave Player.

Editor's review of Audacity (PowerPC)
Edit tracks on the cheap
With so many audio editors out there, finding the right tool for the job can be tricky. The multiplatform, open-source editor Audacity has leaped to the top of our list with its clean interface, excellent features, and support for 32-bit floating-point audio. Audacity succeeds at being both feature-rich and flexible, while keeping the toolbar and work space uncluttered. It does this by relegating most functions--such as effects, edits, and project management--to handy drop-down menus.

Audacity supports uncompressed audio standards such as WAV and AIFF in addition to OGG and MP3 files. A full complement of basic effects such as reverb, delay, and compression are included. Virtual Studio Technology (VST), Linux Audio Developers Simple Plugin Architecture (LAPSDA), and Nyquist plug-ins also are available if you're looking to expand. Another eye-catching feature is the Beat Analyzer, which helps you peg the beats per minute of a phrase.

The performance of most functions is quick--even CPU-hogging tasks such as exporting to MP3 or adding complex effects. Though Audacity doesn't offer advanced effects or features out of the box, its usability and price set this freeware wonder above the crowd.

Editor's review of RealPlayer
Keepin' it Real
One of the dinosaurs of media playback, RealPlayer has been on the scene since 1995. Sometimes it feels like it hasn't been updated since then, no matter what the version number says. Still, RealPlayer 11 beta introduces a major new function and takes care of some frustrating bugs, making it respectable once again.

The player runs smoother than ever, which to some might not be saying much, but if you haven't used it in years, the differences are dramatic. Now the free version of the player has the ability to download videos from the Internet, including Flash-based videos like those on YouTube. Once installed, mousing over an embedded video will provide a pop-up that not only lets you download the vid, but also change its name, the save-to directory, and other options.

The update sees a major face-lift, as well, removing much of the clutter from the downloadable music store. Though not groundbreaking, the RealPlayer music store gets a thumbs up for being easy to use and offering a flexible DRM policy. The new jukebox features let you make playlists, rip CDs, burn custom mixes, and listen to hundreds of online radio stations. The program still suffers from an intrusive installation, but file-type hijacking and upgrade harassment are mostly gone.

The positive steps begun with Version 10 continue, and users of earlier versions should upgrade.

Straightforward and fast
Rich in Web content, short on cash? This free, open-source FTP application is handy if you're looking for a solid tool to handle FTP transfers and don't want to part with your bucks.

The straightforward interface offers translations in most of the world's major languages. Caching directories speeds up browsing FTP sites, and multiple secure connection options ensure that you can move files around without concern. Bookmarking comes in two flavors: the Site Manager for all your major FTP locations, and QuickConnect for fast switching on the fly.

The program lets you download or upload multiple files at once from and to several servers. If your bandwidth is somewhat limited, you'll appreciate a feature that lets you automatically adjust transfer speeds based on the time of day or date. FileZilla also lets you browse FTP sites mid-transfer. The lack of a task scheduler is compensated for, in our eyes, by a powerful filter so you only see the files you need.

FileZilla is no monster, either, eating up a manageable 50 MB in memory. Clearly, this is one of the best FTP tools around.

Editor's review of MindChimes
You don't have to practice feng shui or decorate your home in beaded curtains and lava lamps to enjoy this virtual sound effects program. Created by a classical musician and composer, MindChimes simulates chime sounds with wind patterns that are natural and believable. Nine chime sounds are available, from bells and crystal glass to bamboo. Most impressive is the fact that MindChimes' sound algorithm eschews looping, which creates a natural randomness that assures sounds will never play exactly the same way twice. For creative types, the Chime wizard lets you blend chime sounds using 10 octaves to create different moods and harmonies. The program's simple interface creates an intuitive environment in which to quickly start creating music with just one click. Occasionally we noticed that MindChimes would briefly stop making music when we closed certain application windows, but the music would quickly resume on its own. Overall, we found MindChimes to be a well-thought-out program and a refreshing alternative form of background music.

In a larger preview window on the right, you can view selected fonts in a character maps view; get up close with characters using the telescope (or zoom) view; or you can view the entire alphabet, in both cases with numbers, using the snapshot view. We like the simple tabbed interface that makes viewing each type easy. You also can get keyboard shortcut information about all the characters of a specified font. Editor's review of VSO Image Resizer
No-nonesense resizing
When all you want to do is shrink or expand an image to a specific size, launching an image-editing application such as Adobe Photoshop, or even GIMP, FastStone, or Paint.NET is overkill. Unburdened by all those powerful effects engines, VSO Image Resizer loads quickly and does you the favor of popping open an image-selection window in the process. The nag screen reminding business customers to buy a license does drag you down each time you open, but it's smooth sailing after that.

VSO Image Resizer accepts hand-typed dimensions in pixels or percentages and offers presets from a drop-down list for common sizes. The expanded mode (click "more") includes controls for safeguarding the aspect ratio and quality, and adding a few color-changing effects. Choosing the output destination and whether to resize the original or create a copy are actions you can take from either mode.

Don't expect to see a preview image or an editor for manual resizing. When it's done, it closes. This no-nonsense approach may be too toughened for your taste if visual scaling is what you're after, and that autoclosing makes it a pain to use for frequent or sequential resizing. However, on balance, VSO Image Resizer is a speedy, no-fuss solution for one-off resizers who know what they want.

Editor's review of BigOven

Except for a few annoyances, BigOven works well as a recipe database. The interface includes views for recipe details, shopping lists, meal planning, and nutritional values. As we would expect with this type of application, you can schedule dishes for different days of the week and have it automatically compile a shopping list. To avoid duplicate entries, you have to click a button to combine them, and even then it can't tell the difference between single and plural items, so you may end up with "1 egg" and "2 eggs" as separate items on the list. However, the program will automatically combine items on the printed list.

The recipe-details view comes with a number of ways to sort, filter, and search. Each recipe is displayed with ingredients, instructions, servings, and a picture, if one is available. The edit screen lets you modify recipes or add new ones. We found the nutrition function difficult to use, as it requires you to manually link each ingredient to a separate database entry. We like the way Big Oven handles shopping lists, letting you drag-and-drop a recipe name to automatically generate a list of the appropriate ingredients. We also like the Web function, which lets you browse the BigOven database and seamlessly import new recipes, but only after you register the program. BigOven includes all the functions we find necessary in a recipe database and wraps them in a useful interface, but minor problems may frustrate users.

Editor's review of Feeding Frenzy
Though it might not be the most sophisticated game around, Feeding Frenzy is incredibly addictive. Since this game is a RealArcade title, it will install that program if you don't already have it, which delays installation. Feeding Frenzy harnesses the basic, cruel laws of nature, where you must eat or be eaten. As a fish swimming beneath the sea, your goal is to eat smaller fish while avoiding those larger than you. The more fish you consume, the larger you become. You can then attack bigger fish and gain even more points. Feeding Frenzy offers excellent graphics and sound and throws in a few twists and turns that make an entertaining game even more fun. For instance, if you find a pearl, you can score big points by swallowing a pack of fish with one gulp. Even though the trial version restricts you to 60 minutes of play, Feeding Frenzy will captivate gamers of all levels as they fight their way to the top of the food chain.

Rejoin hard drive fragments
Join your hard drive fragments together into a tight bunch with this freeware. Auslogics Disk Defrag's interface couldn't be any cleaner or easier to use.

Choose a hard drive from an easy-to-read pull-down menu, and Disk Defrag instantly displays the drive's size, and used and free space. The program even displays a pie graph for visual learners. One click starts the defragmentation process. The program's defrag process screen displays another handy visual. A sector map makes it easy to see how much of the drive is fragmented, allocated, or free. As the program churns away, the defragged sectors are displayed in blue.

We found the program fast, even on older XP systems. A handy HTML report is prepared after each defrag session. A summary displays the total files and folders defragged, while the detail section lists the defrag outcome for each file. We only wish a final sector map was included in the report. Novices to system administrators will love this easy-to-use hard drive defrag program.

Editor's review of Freelancer demo
An amazing contrast of epic scope and simple control, Freelancer does an excellent job of mixing elements of simulation, role-playing, arcade action, and nonlinear cinema. Outstanding 3D graphics and a theatrical soundtrack are just the appetizers. Most innovative is the game's mouse-only controls for space flight, which are far easier to learn than those found in most simulators. The point-and-click story elements of the game can get a bit repetitive, but the action-packed battles definitely liven things up. An excellent interface and ample hand-holding make it easy to bounce among the wildly different modes of gameplay. Although the demo only delivers one complete mission, the replay value is high. If you've ever been scared off by the complexity of simulation or strategy games, definitely give this one a try.

Editor's review of Recover Files

Proving you can sometimes have it all, this freeware tool is not only flexible and powerful, it's also easy to use. Recover File's interface is informative and intuitive. A concise manual explains those details casual users might need brushing up on.

Operating Recover Files takes a bare minimum of steps. On program start, the app displays all drives where files that might be recovered reside. Simply select the drives you want to check and press a single Analyze button. The process isn't lightning fast, but the results are full of helpful information. Recoverable files are listed on a simple spreadsheet with Path, Status, Size, Date Created, and Date Modified information for each. It's incredibly easy to set filters to list only the files you want to see. The app lists categories of file types to further help filtering the file list. Recovery is the easiest step. Simply check each file to attempt to recover and press a single button.

Recover File rates recovery from Overwritten to Very Good, but status is only a best guess. Still, this effective freeware works so well it should be in every user's toolbox.

Go from design flunky to graphic genius in less than 60 seconds. This creative program helps you put together business cards, address labels, letterhead, and CD labels in a snap. We were surprised that, despite the amount of features, OfficePrinter as a program doesn't take up a lot of disc space. A whole library of templates helps get you started, and included clip art and logo designs give you more options for design. During testing we were able to create business cards easily, as editing options are easy to find and are straightforward. You can choose any size font for text, add and edit images, and draw shapes. Effects such as adding shadows, creating a spiral effect, or zooming can be applied to any detail as well. Editor's review of HomeSite
Web builders who code HTML and other scripting languages on the Web have a friend in HomeSite. This highly configurable code-based editor offers an intuitive interface, advanced automation features, and strong file-handling capabilities. The newest edition of HomeSite is the strongest yet and works well with other Macromedia tools such as Dreamweaver and Fireworks.
HomeSite's timesaving features include a Secondary File panel that lets you access two directories at once. You'll also find a built-in FTP manager, an auto-backup feature, a project-deployment system, a code validator, and several other powerful tools.

In keeping up with Web trends, HomeSite's color-coding, tag help, validation, and code optimization supports XHTML, DHTML, JavaScript, ASP, CFML, Perl, and VBScript. The editor also has a double-byte mode that supports Unicode and other international character sets. You can even use VTML (Visual Tool Markup Language) to build tag editors for additional tag-based languages that are not currently supported by HomeSite.

As text-based editors go, it's hard to find a more robust, modern product than HomeSite. The steep learning curve required to make use of HomeSite's more advanced features may put it out of reach for many beginners, but if you are a professional who codes by hand, this is your editor of choice.

view larger From Binary Zoo: Described as "part Asteroids, part Robotron, and part Paint Shop Pro," this vivid game puts a unique twist on traditional shooter action. The aim of the game is to change the color of the entire screen from black to white or white to black. This is achieved by shooting the alien blobs that color the background when destroyed. There are three colors of blobs to shoot (red, green, and blue) and the color they leave behind changes the behavior of any enemies that travel over it. The more of the screen you color, the more the enemies' behavior changes.

The latest version adds two new power-ups and better ship-rotation control.

Editor's review of Mono
Color us impressed
The excellent shooter Duo features a two-directional gun with enemies and weapons based on mathematical functions. Binary Zoo's follow-up uses similar elements and a unique treatment of colors to create a one-of-a-kind gaming experience. Start with a black or white screen and then turn it into its opposite color by shooting colorful blobs that paint the screen as they explode.

Auto-fire is selected by default. You can turn it off and use the left mouse button to fire manually, but there's no reason to do so. The right mouse button allows you to rotate your ship. Since the mouse moves the ship as well, directing your shots takes some practice, but it quickly becomes second nature.

As the screen changes color, your enemies are affected. Red makes enemies return fire; green speeds them up; and blue makes them home in on your ship. All of this is rather extraneous, however, since you'll be too busy moving and firing to pay much attention to what the heck's going on. The easy and normal levels aren't much different, but playing on hard is psychedelically masochistic. Don't worry when the screen starts to pulse and throb. It's supposed to do that.

Take your best shot
Capturing screenshots may not be glamorous, but at least SnagIt makes it simple. SnagIt lets you capture any part of your screen, from a partial image to the entire contents of a scrolling window. You can grab images of Web sites and software applications or pictures from scanners and digital cameras. You even can capture video and record screen action in AVI format.

Editing tools let you manipulate and enhance captures using effects (such as Brightness, Hue, and Saturation), filters, and borders. You can add arrows, substitute colors in the captured image, or create dark or light backgrounds with a single click. Version 8 adds several interactive features, such as saving Web pages with HTML links, adding hot spots and rollover states to objects and areas, and exporting files in SWF and PDF formats.

This program outdoes itself in features, so figuring out the menu structure may take a while, but the GUI additions in version 8 are a welcome addition. Unfortunately, the latest update is just as slow to start as the last version. Even with its package of powerful options, we found SnagIt flexible and easy to use. Balloon tips, wizards, and an online video tutorial make it simple for beginners, and its sophisticated capabilities will satisfy advanced users.

Power up your file tree
This slimmed-down file manager trumps Windows Explorer on many counts, but it may have too much flexibility for some users.

Xplorer2 Lite's interface is easily adapted to your preferences. Toolbars and information windows can be moved on a whim. You can browse two or more folders in one window, using program tabs and different panes. What's more, you can customize search windows and save the settings for later use. Visual filters improve crowded directory readability. You can easily rename multiple files at once, split or merge files, synchronize folders, and shred data to prevent recovery. However, we are disappointed that the Check Duplicates and Compare Subfolders functions are disabled.

An enhanced DOS command line allows you to create scripts to process file batches, a nice touch for more advanced users. The online help is detailed, tool tips are mini manuals, and the Tip of the Day feature gives even more helpful information. All in all, this program makes the learning curve gentle. Almost everyone will find this file manager a great improvement over their current tool. Xplorer2 Lite will even make novices feel like power users.

Editor's review of Metapad

This program was designed to rival Notepad, but its functionality far surpasses the Windows standard. Metapad's interface is a minor facelift to Notepad, with icons and tool tips replacing plain text prompts. Under the menus, Metapad offers numerous improvements and increased functionality such as dual fonts, configurable tabs, and the ability to save to text, HTML, or source code formats such as Java. Metapad also supports an external viewer, such as a Web browser, to display hyperlinks.

The program loads very fast and requires a bare minimum of memory to run. It could easily replace Notepad on a user's system, but making it the default Windows text editor is not a simple process: the program FAQ lists three methods, none of which are for novices. Most users will prefer to load the program through a shortcut. Metapad has been around long enough for users to create language packs, spell check, and other add-ons. This program should be added to any Windows system, and will soon become the preferred text editor for novices and advanced users alike.

Mozilla's Thunderbird comes into its own with version 2.0, offering features and innovations that take aim at both Web mail clients and industry standards like Microsoft's Outlook.

The program loads fast, even when weighed down by multiple folders and RSS feeds, and the basic feature set remains intact: good junk mail filters, HTML support, multiple identities, and POP, IMAP, and Microsoft Exchange server support. Security features include S/MMIE, digital signing, message encryption, and a built-in phishing detector. Interface tweaks maximize message viewing, an obvious necessity in an e-mail reader.

What makes this freeware e-mail client such a serious contender are the new features. Back and forward buttons, like you have in your Web browser, let you jump through messages in the order that you viewed them. Customizable tag names and colors make it a cinch to keep things organized, even across dozens of message folders. The folder pane is customizable. Gmail and Mac users will find configuration as simple as entering your e-mail address and password, with rumored support forthcoming for other Web-based providers. Search results can be saved, and Thunderbird has Firefox's extension capability, allowing for user-designed tweaks that greatly enhance the program.

Flexible, powerful, and lightweight, Thunderbird 2 is an appropriate companion app to Mozilla's Firefox in every way.

Editor's review of FeedDemon
5 star editors rating Feed your news demon

This well-crafted, standalone newsreader makes an ideal choice for both novices who've never heard of an RSS feed and advanced users looking to put some oomph and flexibility into their reading habits. We particularly liked FeedDemon's setup wizard, which allows you to subscribe to an unlimited number of popular RSS feeds by simply checking boxes. The program also provides links to several other RSS directories.

FeedDemon's interface is very good, but its default setting, which places the headline and browser panes side by side, is somewhat clumsy. This is easily remedied with the buttons that sit right at the top of each folder and each item. The utility's Watch Channels feature searches for news items containing user-specified keywords and places them in a separate group so they're easier to find. We're also fond of the app's News Bins function, which allows you to archive a story simply by dragging a headline and placing it in a storage bin in the left-side column.

Another compelling feature is the integrated podcast manager, which will automatically send new podcasts to your music jukebox. There's a support forum where you can post questions and get answers from other users, and Newsgator has a free webware client so you can check your feeds wherever you are. We strongly recommend using FeedDemon to soothe your hunger.

Editor's review of Internet Download Manager
5 star editors rating Gracefully become a power downloader

Don't let the dull name fool you: Internet Download Manager is a full-featured package that handles downloading tasks with aplomb. It conveniently integrates into your browser, even if you use Mozilla or Opera.

It automatically sorts incoming files by file type and puts them in the appropriate folder. Most importantly, it supercharges download speeds (it doubled ours). Its windowed interface is clean and easy to understand. Power users can take advantage of the command line interface to resume file transfers, schedule downloads, connect through dial-up, or log on to password-protected sites. Experienced users also can limit the number of connections, the download speeds for specific sites, and even create an exception list to block specific, user-defined sites.

Other features include automatic virus checking and the ability to download all files linked to a page. The new version has a Web spider that can analyze a site and retrieve, for example, all the images on it.

Internet Download Manager strikes us as a natural choice for users in need of a trusty transfer tool. Version 5.11 build 5 added FLV grabber that can be used to download videos from YouTube, Google Video, MySpaceTV, and other popular sites.

From Pidgin:

Pidgin (formerly known as Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging client for BSD and Windows. It is compatible with AIM (Oscar and TOC protocols), ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, and Zephyr networks. Pidgin users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, and iconify on away.

Version 2.4.2 has minor tweaks and improvements, including adjusting the typing area size, adding a plugin for a Send button, and more, as well as other bug-fixes.

Editor's review of Pidgin
5 star editors rating Gaim becomes Pidgin

Your mother uses AOL Instant Messenger. Your spouse prefers MSN. Your office insists on Yahoo. What are you going to do? You could run all those chat clients at once, or you could use Gaim, now renamed Pidgin. Like Trillian, Fire, and other third-party IM clients, this open-source messaging application lets you access multiple IM networks from one window, including Google Talk and MySpaceIM as well as lesser-known protocols such as Jabber and Gadu-Gadu.

Pidgin's biggest change is the redesigned interface. The Buddy List can be viewed in Basic or Advanced mode, and the most important features, including the Plug-in List, have been graduated from the Preferences window into their own panes. Twenty-two plug-ins come prepackaged as Pidgin repositions itself as a highly extensible chat client.

The IM features are unimpeachable: smileys (you can find tons of emoticons on the developer's site), file transfers, and multiperson chats. The Buddy Pounce feature lets you automatically perform certain actions (play a sound, execute a command, open an IM window) when a contact signs on or off. Pidgin also gets lots of intangibles right: logging and time-stamping, for instance, are well-executed and easy to access. However, it lacks IP telephony and video conferencing, and there are still some bugs--most notably in the Help menu. Still, Pidgin remains a highly recommended text-only messaging app.

Editor's review of Blender
5 star editors rating Blend your rendering programs into one all-powerful app

Editor's review of AutoRefresher for IE
3 star editors rating If your clicking finger is getting tired reloading your favorite auction site, AutoRefresher for IE may be the answer. It's a small add-on for Internet Explorer that automatically reloads the current page at regular intervals. The slightly confusing toolbar interface consists of a single button. Clicking it pops up a list of preset intervals, ranging from 10 seconds to 10 minutes. You also can enter a custom value. This is definitely a niche product that most users won't need. But it's a convenient tool for auction hounds and anyone else who needs to keep up with a quickly changing Web page
