Editor's review of Warlords Battlecry III
Starting out as turn-based and developing nicely into real-time, this fantasy strategy series up the antes in its third version with new role-playing elements, more races, more heroes, a new spell system, and radically improved graphics. For fans of real-time strategy looking for a non-linear storyline with a hero who develops and improves abilities as the story progresses, Warlords Battlecry III might be just their ticket. For those who like RPGs but disdain structure building, resource collecting, and army management, you should definitely look elsewhere.
The interface and control system will be very familiar to anyone who's ever played a real-time strategy game. Starting with your hero, you must collect gold, metal, stone, and crystal, turn those resources into buildings, and then use those structures to develop technology, produce weapons, and create troops. The wide array of units available in 16 different races will undoubtedly keep the full game fresh, but the demo only allows for play with the brutish Dwarves and the insect-like Swarm. A brief but excellent tutorial and four single-player campaigns are available for learning the game, and two skirmish maps let you test your mettle against customizable AI opponents. It's unfortunate that the demo doesn't allow multiplayer gameplay, as a major factor in the full game will be how well it handles one-on-one skirmishes between two human players. However, the quality of the gameplay, the bountiful amount of single-player exploration available, and the ability to practice ad infinitum against the computer in skirmishes make this demo a definite must-try for fans of real-time fantasy strategy.
